Don Nelson Award Spring 2026
Nominations
Mike Guzman (Empower Gymnastics)
I am writing to formally nominate Mike Guzman
for the Don Nelson Memorial Award.
Mike has been a dedicated and influential
coach in the Northern California gymnastics community for many
years. As the owner of his own gym, he has trained high-level
athletes while fostering an environment that emphasizes not only
excellence, but also connection and community. His impact
extends well beyond his own program, helping to bring together
gyms and individuals across the region.
Mike has served as Past Northern California
Chairman and currently holds the position of Vice Chair for
NorCal. In these leadership roles, he has consistently
demonstrated a deep commitment to the growth and unity of the
gymnastics community. He is easily approachable and always
willing to answer questions or help coaches with anything they
need.
One of Mike’s most meaningful contributions is
his work on the senior video presentation each year. For many
years, he has devoted countless hours to creating a thoughtful
and memorable tribute for graduating athletes and their
families. Each presentation is carefully crafted around a unique
theme, reflecting both creativity and genuine care. His work
never fails to leave a lasting emotional impact on all who
attend.
In addition to his leadership and creative
contributions, Mike is always among the first to volunteer his
time and expertise to support gyms, individuals, and
organizations. His willingness to help others and his dedication
to strengthening the gymnastics community truly set him apart.
For these reasons, I strongly and
wholeheartedly recommend Mike Guzman for the Don Nelson Memorial
Award. He exemplifies the spirit of service, leadership, and
commitment that this award represents.
Thank you for your consideration.
Darcie Fellows is what it looks like to be a selfless leader in the Gymnastics Community. She has served many years on the Nor Cal board as a Zone Rep as well as leading her own gym in many service endeavors. She has been key in raising the bar in California for athletes, coaches and judges. We are lucky to have her as an advocate here for us.
I am honored to nominate
Shelly Hansen of D&G Sports for the prestigious Don Nelson Memorial Award. While Shelly is not a coach, judge or gym owner, her impact on the Northern California gymnastics community is both profound and far-reaching. She embodies the very spirit of service, dedication, and contribution that this award represents.Shelly is truly the glue that holds the NorCal gymnastics community together. Through her work as an equipment dealer, she has built meaningful relationships with coaches, gym owners, judges, athletes, and families across the region. More importantly, she approaches these relationships with genuine care, kindness, and unwavering support. Shelly does not simply conduct business; she invests in people.
Time and again, Shelly has demonstrated her deep commitment to the gymnastics community by showing up when it matters most. Whether offering guidance, helping solve urgent equipment needs, supporting programs during challenging times, or simply being a steady and encouraging presence, she consistently goes above and beyond. Her willingness to help anyone in need - without seeking recognition - has made her an indispensable and beloved figure throughout Northern California.
Shelly’s professionalism, reliability, and excellence in her role have also elevated the standard of service within NorCal. She understands the unique demands of gymnastics programs and competitions; and works tirelessly to ensure that gyms have the equipment and support necessary for athletes to train safely and successfully. Her dedication has directly contributed to the growth and strength of gymnastics in NorCal.
Beyond her professional contributions, Shelly exemplifies the values of integrity, generosity, and community spirit. She celebrates the successes of others, offers encouragement during setbacks, and fosters a sense of unity that benefits everyone involved in our sport.
For her outstanding contributions, selfless service, and wholehearted dedication to the Northern California gymnastics community, I can think of no one more deserving of the Don Nelson Memorial Award than Shelly Hansen.
